You might be able to stream Netflix and Amazon from a new Explora

Deep inside MultiChoice’s financial results for the last year was mention of the broadcaster signing deals with two streaming giants.

Those giants are Netflix and Amazon.

MultiChoice reported rather good numbers for the financial year but the gains are on the lower side. While total revenue of R51.4 billion is great, the fact that the revenue figure has only grown three percent from the previous year may be a concern.

Which brings us to the note in the financial results.

The note is located in a section regarding customer retention. Within that section is the note, “signed deals with Netflix and Amazon to integrate service onto new Explora decoder”.

Speaking to Channel24, MultiChoice chief executive officer Calvo Mawela said, “We have long been a content aggregator, and this is proof of our aggregator model at work – providing simplicity, choice and convenience for our customers.”

It appears then as if MultiChoice will offer customers the ability to add a Netflix and Amazon Prime Video subscription to their DStv subscription.

Now we have to ask the question – why would you want to do that?

In terms of Amazon Prime Video this makes a slight bit of sense as the service is billed in dollars. With that having been said, Amazon Prime Video comes with the perk of being able to access Twitch Prime along with your Prime Video subscription.

This also makes no sense for Netflix as Netflix is billed in Rands locally.

As we said, it seems as if this is what MultiChoice wants to do but following an interview with chief financial officer at MultiChoice Tim Jacobs by MyBroadband aside from a distribution agreement with Netflix and Amazon, there isn’t much to go on.

This may end up being the ability to stream Amazon Prime Video and Netflix from your DStv Explora decoder which, while cool, is not exactly ground breaking.

We now sit and wait in anticipation for what this collaboration between the trio will yield.
