ZACR says that CO.ZA domain registrations have increased significantly since March

By now you’re probably fed up with hearing how important the internet has become in the past few months, but we’re about to say it again because it’s true.

The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) has announced that the total number of CO.ZA domains now sits at 1.25 million. The ZACR announced in August 2019 that 1.2 million CO.ZA domains had been registered.

While the increase may not usually be anything special, the ZACR notes that domain registrations from SMEs has “picked up significantly since late March”.

“It speaks volumes that CO.ZA has powered over the 1.25m mark during the current lockdown as anecdotal evidence suggests South Africans are increasingly snapping up domains to help them launch businesses, pursue creative and study endeavours, secure their digital identities and generally become much more active online,” says ZACR chief executive officer, Lucky Masilela.

The ZACR says that the reason so many more domains are being registered is thanks in part to the ease of registration.

Where previously folks would have to complete the process using email, the Extensible Provision Protocol platform make it easier to register domains.

“Our current model championed by the late Minister is one of the reasons South Africa boasts the highest number of domain name registrations coupled with the lowest domain name operating and registration costs on the continent, even within the current framework of an inflationary-based wholesale fee adjustment request,” says Masilela.

That model is a management model known as the Triple R and it seeks to create a clear separation of roles and responsibilities. This has led to the formation of an Authority, a Registry Operator and channel partners in the form of Registrars.

“Significant benefits have already been unlocked by using a local player and home-grown technology to establish an SA-based Central Registry. We’re confident that the benefits of enabling the Authority to interface with a single, local player rooted in African excellence will increasingly be felt as the Central Registry takes CO.ZA and the other managed second-level domains to even greater heights,” said Masilela in conclusion.
