This War of Mine becomes part of the education system in Poland

The 2014 game This War of Mine has broken ground for games today as it becomes part of the official recommended reading for high school students in Poland.

In the 2020 / 2021 school year Polish students will have the game included on their school reading list. The catch here is the age restriction, however. Given the serious nature of the game and its efforts to depict the brutality of conflict, only students aged 18 and above will have it recommended.

That being said the game will be available to all Polish high schools for free.

All of this has come from official recognition from the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawieckiand, and the Ministry of Education.

The developer, 11 bit studios, is a Polish company, so there’s also the matter of national cultural heritage too.

“Of course, games are already being used in education for teaching maths, chemistry, and developing cognitive abilities, but I don’t think we’ve ever encountered a game being officially included in the educational system on a national level as a school reading. I’m proud to say 11 bit studios’ work can add to the development of education and culture in our country. This can be a breakthrough moment for all artists creating games all around the world,” Says 11 bit studios CEO, Grzegorz Miechowsk

This War of Mine is available on PC (Steam, GOG and Humble), Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. This War of Mine: The Little Ones, which focuses on children in war, is also available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Thankfully for those of us outside of the Polish high school system getting it for free, the game is relatively cheap to buy on all platforms.
