EA’s trailer for FIFA 21 and Madden 21 is big on theatrics and not much else

Last night the EA Play 2020 live stream took place online, with the virtual showcase replacing the in-person one the studio normally holds for E3. There was not much in terms of new titles to get amped about, but EA did bring out the usual suspects – namely FIFA 21 and Madden 21.

Instead of separate trailers, the two sports titles got a joint one, with EA highlighting the fact that both games will be landing on next-gen consoles later this year. As such, whether your allegiances lie with the PS5 or Xbox Series X, both of EA’s high-profile gaming franchises will be getting a port.

EA is also talking up the fact that the look and feel of FIFA 21 and Madden 21 will be “next level” as they term it, with the aforementioned trailer matching much of the hype.

That said, while very flashy and atmospheric, we get next to nothing in terms of actual gameplay for either title. This is a little disappointing as recent FIFA and Madden games have proved a little lacklustre as far as improving gameplay goes.

If anything this new trailer, which is pasted below, highlights what EA seems to be focusing on for the next-gen consoles – having big name sports stars, being fully licensed and adding as much theatricality as possible.

As for how play works out on the virtual pitch, remains to be seen, but we’re ever optimistic that EA has not forgotten about those crucial elements of its upcoming titles. With next-gen titles promising greater experiences when it comes to gaming, EA would do well to make the most of it and give us next-level gameplay to match the next-level aesthetics.
