Future Chrome update will make browser less memory hungry in Windows 10

Google Chrome is the most popular browser available, but it has always had a reputation for being a bit resource-intensive on Windows 10 devices, with memory in particular bring what it utilised most. That might change though, with a future release of the browser said to be less thirsty for memory.

This according to MSPowerUser, which cites an unnamed Google engineer who says an update for Chrome is on the way to address its memory issues.

The engineer adds that Google has taken a play out of Microsoft’s playbook and its Edge browser, by using an undisclosed technique to lower RAM usage and theoretically boost the performance of the browser.

Whether such an update can deliver a boost in performance remains to be seen, but with more people working and studying from home these days, and by extension being online more often, having a browser that does not hog resources, will prove important.

There is also the issue of the myriad different system setups that Chrome users will have, depending on the device they are using. As such, improvements in performance, and crucially, memory used, will vary greatly.

That said, the aforementioned engineer says Google’s testing has yielded savings in the hundreds of MBs.

As for when Windows 10 Chrome users will be able to experience the benefits of said update, it will all hinge on when Google’s team gets access to the necessary developer kit to begin rollout.

In the interim, tab management and routine checks of Windows Task Manager will be needed to keep track of how resource heavy Chrome is being.
