What to do if you bought the wrong Pokémon Expansion Pass

For the latest Pokémon games – Sword and Shield – things are being done a bit differently for future content in the form of the Expansion Pass which grants access to both announced pieces of DLC. Unfortunately there are two versions of the Expansion Pass which has lead some to buying the wrong one for the games they own.

Just like the main games there is an Expansion Pass for Pokémon Sword, and another for Pokémon Shield. If you bought a pass which doesn’t match up with the version of the game you bought, then you need to get in contact with Nintendo to sort things out.

“When purchasing the Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass or Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass, please ensure you select the one that corresponds with the version of the game you own. If you mistakenly purchased the incorrect pass, please contact customer support. https://support.nintendo.com/contactus,” reads an announcement from the company.

While this may seem like a simple case of double checking before you hit the purchase button, we can see how people can make this mistake, because we almost did ourselves. We recently went to redeem a review copy of the Expansion Pass and nearly claimed the wrong one by accident. We were one A button press away from the blunder, but thankfully caught the mistake in time.

As Nintendo has had to make an official announcement about this, we have to assume that it’s becoming an issue.

At this point we have to ask why the Expansion Pass isn’t version agnostic. The only real reason we can think of is for those dedicated fans who bought both copies of the game, who would now need to buy two Expansion Passes too. Even then a simple back end check could prevent this having the pass only redeem to one game.

Regardless of why this problem exists, it does, and if you’ve found yourself saddled with it it’s best to contact Nintendo at the link above.

Just a note here, however. If you live in a smaller market like us, it may be difficult to find the correct contact details as you’ll need to select a region first. If your region isn’t present look for the final at the end of the list “Other countries“.
