With new hardware from Sony and Microsoft at the end of this year the state of console gaming is a bit in flux leaving many apprehensive about buying new games on outgoing machines. Thankfully Marvel’s Avengers is the latest game to support a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Chief technology officer at developer Crystal Dynamics, Gary Snethen, recently penned a post on the official PlayStation Blog announcing that if you buy Avengers on the older Sony console, you get the upgrade for free, along with play between the two generations.

“…We’re happy to announce that when you purchase Marvel’s Avengers for the PS4 platform, either digitally or on disc, and later upgrade to a PS5, you get the PS5 version of the game with all of its enhancements free of charge! In addition, PS5 gamers can play Marvel’s Avengers online with PS4 gamers, so anyone can upgrade at any time and continue playing with friends on both platforms,” writes Snethen.

Thankfully those who prefer Xbox will not be left out in the cold. A press release issued by publisher Square Enix confirms that those on Microsoft’s consoles will receive much of the same treatment. Those who buy the game on the Xbox One get a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X, and owners of the game on both Xbox consoles can play together.

“Featuring extremely fast load times, boosted resolution and fidelity, improved texturing and armor destruction, ray tracing, and more – Marvel’s Avengers will look and play great on next-gen systems,” Reads part of the press release.

Those hoping for even more information about this game should be happy to note that an event called War Table will be taking place tomorrow, 24th June. This promises to share more information about the game on every platform.

Marvel’s Avengers launches on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Google Stadia come 4th September. The versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will be available for these new consoles near the end of 2020.
