YouTube is giving kids something to do with virtual summer camp

South African schools are reopening albeit incredibly slowly and under constant threat of having to close again should a COVID-19 case be discovered.

Of course South Africa is not unique in respect of schools being closed but in other parts of the world – specifically the US – school holidays are currently in effect.

Now usually at this time US children would be off to summer camp where they do arts, sports and even learn from time to time. While South Africa does have summer camps they may not be as popular as they are across the pond.

We bring this up because YouTube has launched Camp YouTube, a “digital learning experience to help parents recreate the fun of summer camp at home”.

In short Camp YouTube is a collection of 1 200 videos which have been collated into the virtual camp which will last for two weeks until 5th July.

“Camp YouTube will spotlight content on the Learn@Home site and YouTube Kids across beloved summer camp themes, such as arts, adventure, sports, STEM, and more,” writes vice president of content partnerships, learning, social impact, family, health, film and TV at YouTube, Malik Ducard.

Parents can head over to the YouTube Learning website to select a camp to explore for free. There are video recommendations for kids under 13 as well as teenagers.

For arts, teenagers will be able to learn about art history, dance, music and songwriting. For sports the Junior NBA has developed two youth basketball camps for kids younger than 13 and teenagers.

As for STEM, Camp YouTube will cover space exploration from National Geographic as well as Earth science from AsapSCIENCE. Camp YouTube participants can also learn computer programming with Jabrils who you should be watching even if you don’t want learn coding.

Everything we’ve mentioned above and lots more is available for free via YouTube Learning or the YouTube Kids app for Android and iOS.
