6th July marked as return date for many South Africa school children

Just two weeks ago South African school children returned to school as part of a phased approached to lifting lockdown restrictions.

The reopening of schools was limited to Grade 7 and Grade 12 learners and now the Department of Basic Education has penciled in some new dates for more learners.

From 6th July the following grades will be allowed to return to school:

  • Pre-primary
  • Grade R
  • Grade 1
  • Grade 2
  • Grade 3
  • Grade 6
  • Grade 10
  • Grade 11
  • Schools of Skill: Years 2 and 3

In addition to those grades, Schools for Learners with Severe Intellectual Disabilities will be permitted to reopen for Grades R, 1, 2, 3 and final year. Schools with Learners with Severe and Profound Intellectual Disabilities will be allowed to welcome back years 1 – 3. Schools with autistic learners will be allowed to have their junior (below 13) and final year students (18 years and above) return.

“We will continue to work hard in schools to make sure that we protect our learners, teachers and employees within schools. It is important to work together to ensure that we beat the virus,” said minister of basic education, Angie Motshekga.

Schools will be permitted to reopen other grades so long as the “school complies with the minimum health, safety and social distancing measures and requirements on COVID-19, referred to in section 5 of the DBE Standard Operating Procedures and the DBE”.

This news comes off the back of three schools in Gauteng being closed following concerns that COVID-19 may spread.

Whether schools are prepared for even more students to arrive in little over two weeks time, and whether the DBE sticks to this date in between now and then, remains to be seen.
