Microsoft rolls out preview of Defender for Android

There’s a new security solution available, or is that a new version of a longstanding security solution?

Either way, Microsoft has announced the public preview of its Microsoft Defender ATP for Android.

While private users would surely benefit from the threat protection, Microsoft is clearly aiming this solution at one group in particular – enterprises.

“In addition, the ability to restrict access to corporate data from devices that are deemed ‘risky’ will enable enterprises to secure users and data on their Android devices. All events and alerts will be available through a single pane of glass in the Microsoft Defender Security Center, giving security teams a centralized view of threats on Android devices along with other platforms,” writes senior program manager at Microsoft, Kanishka Srivastava.

A single pane of glass to oversee security is by no means unique to Microsoft Defender but Microsoft has one advantage over many security solution providers – many enterprises are already using its platforms.

Being able to integrate threat intelligence into business processes easily and then IT teams being able to access that intelligence from the Microsoft Defender Security Center would surely be valuable for many businesses.

The degree to which security teams could manage devices through Microsoft Defender for Android is incredible. Microsoft says that should a device be compromised it could be blocked from accessing certain apps which may lead to other devices being compromised. The ability to take a granular approach to security but with a broad overlook is rather great for making decisions.

The Redmond firm says that its solutions enhance the built-in protections of the Android platform (that is Google Play Protect) through visibility and controls.

At present Microsoft ATP for Android is only available to commercial Defender Advanced Threat Protection customers who have preview features turned on in the Microsoft Defender Security Center.

With more users working from home on a more permanent basis, a solution such as this might be good news for security teams managing a scattered workforce.
