Braindancing is Cyberpunk 2077’s answer to Detective Mode

For years now games have been criticised for copying the Arkham games’ Detective Mode as a way to solve puzzles and progress the story. CD Projekt themselves used something similar for The Witcher. In Cyberpunk 2077, however, we see what could be an innovation in this space with what’s called a Braindance.

The Braindance is a process of one person recording their memories and another being able to experience that memory in complete detail thanks to some fictional, futuristic implants.

This has been shown off in the first episode of Night City Wire, a 25-minute presentation showing off various parts of the game.

While it also touches on a short trailer called “The Gig” (which you can watch separately here) the Braindance is the most interesting part to us.

While the developers presenting this feature do state that it’s used for porn and videogames in the fiction of Cyberpunk 2077, what’s shown off is someone robbing a store. The person experiencing that Braindance gets to feel all the fear and excitement in this dangerous and illegal activity, without actually doing anything.

But in the context of the game this isn’t for kicks, it’s instead used as an investigative tool to more deeply look at the game. As you’re stuck playing as a single character in Cyberpunk 2077, the Braindance allows for the perspective of multiple other denizens of Night City.

Bringing things back to The Gig it’s worth watching the part in the longer video about it, as some developer commentary gives it more context

What you see in that trailer is from the very early parts of the game where you’re introduced to Jackie and the Badlands, an area around Night City which looks more Mad Max than Cyberpunk.

Cyberpunk 2077 launches on 19th November for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. As announced with Marvel’s Avengers recently, this game will also get a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 version if you buy it on the previous generation of console.

Outside of the game we’re also getting an anime. CD Projekt is working with Studio Trigger and Netflix to make Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. All we’ve been told about this series is that it’s coming in 2022, but we have a press release with more information.

Edgerunners will be a 10-episode series and will have an original score by Akira Yamaoka, who worked on various titles in the Silent Hills series.

“We at Trigger  are thrilled to work with CD Projekt Red to create a brand-new story set in the world of the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077. It’s a huge challenge to adapt this universe into an anime, but we are eager to face it head-on,” says Masahiko Otsuka, the CEO of Studio Trigger.

This is a new story apart from the on in Cyberpunk 2077 too. While the pair will share the same setting and world, their stories will be different. We have to wonder (and maybe hope) that the two will intersect in some way.

“I’ve always loved cyberpunk as a genre, but always found it difficult to create as an original work. This is why I’m very excited to be working with CD Projekt Red on this project. It won’t be easy to please both game and anime fans, but I love a challenge, and I’m looking forward to the production. We’ll do our best to meet and exceed expectations,” adds director Hiroyuki Imaishi.
