Quickfire Review: 2K Nintendo Switch Collections

2K recently released BioShock: The Collection, the Borderlands Legendary Collection and the XCOM 2 Collection onto the Nintendo Switch.

At an eye-watering R849 a pop on the Nintendo eshop, these collections are by no means cheap, but hey, this is the price to pay for convenience. We’re sure that a lot of gamers out there will definitely be keen to pick them up though and this is where we come in.

Borderlands: The Pre Sequel

First and foremost, this will not be an in-depth review of each specific title on offer since these are all old games from 2K’s extensive back catalogue of successfully published titles. Most people are already familiar with the subject matter of the franchises here so we’ll rather talk about performance and graphics instead.

Loading up Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition on Nintendo Switch is remarkably smooth sailing. The game runs perfectly fine and graphically, due to the game’s old age, still looks as good as the original did back in the day.

Borderlands 2 and the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel are equally as remarkable and we’re pleasantly surprised to see just how well they run albeit at a lower frame rate of 30fps.

Borderlands 1

BioShock: The Collection delivers another similar experience. BioShock 1 and BioShock 2 are older titles and still look gorgeous on Switch. They’re significantly prettier sister title BioShock: Infinite also holds up quite well. Again though, these feature a lower frame rate of 30fps to compensate for running so smoothly.

The XCOM 2 Collection is the black sheep of the list with some stuttery gameplay and minor grievances that detract from the overall experience. Playing a game like XCOM 2 on the go however is a major plus point given how long certain missions can take because of the game’s turn-based mechanics.

Unfortunately though, there’s just something that feels off about the game with details being left out and textures looking as if they haven’t loaded in properly. It’s not the definitive way to play XCOM 2 and we recommend picking up the PC version instead and just playing it the traditional way.

XCOM 2

All three of these collections can be played both docked or in handheld mode but if you’re opting to play these games docked, it’s a baffling choice to pay so much for them when they are readily available with deep discounts on other consoles and on PC.

The major selling point of these collections on Nintendo Switch is to play them on the go and in that regard, they are definitely worth picking up with the exception of the XCOM 2 Collection which is passable at best.
