Another cancellation as the Geneva Motor Show no longer happening in 2021

It seems like whenever we’ve written about an event of late, it has been to announce that it has been cancelled or moved online in part. Unfortunately that trend continues, with the Geneva Motor Show officially being cancelled next year.

That said, the cancellation is understandable given how many people visit the Swiss city each year specifically for this event, which clearly poses a risk in the COVID-19 era.

This is the second time in a short number of months that organisers have had to announce a cancelled Geneva Motor Show, with the 2021 one having originally been planned for 4th to 14th March next year.

“The Committee and the Foundation Board have decided not to organise an event in 2021: A majority of GIMS exhibitors who took part in a survey, stated that they would probably not participate in a 2021 edition in and that they would prefer to have a GIMS in 2022. The automotive sector is currently going through a difficult phase, and exhibitors need time to recover from the effects of the pandemic,” organisers explained.

“Furthermore, it is far from certain that the current health situation would permit the organisation of an event attracting more than 600’000 visitors and 10’000 journalists next spring,” they added regarding the decision.

How carmakers will go about showcasing the new concept vehicles, technologies and recently manufactured models, remains to be seen, but the likes of Volkswagen (featured in the header image), going virtual for this year’s cancelled Motor Show, we suspect a number of companies will look to do the same in 2021.

Given the budgets that many of the stands and presentations at the Geneva Motor Show, feature, some could even choose to host standalone live streamed events too.

With the Geneva Motor Show being one of the most high-profile events cancelled in 2021, there are still some which are planning to host in-person ones, such as CES 2021. Given how the fight to stop the spread COVID-19 has gone in different parts of the world, the chances of more large scale events and expos next year, are quite slim.
