A number of carmakers, particularly those in Germany, have noted that electric cars will be a key part of their strategies moving forward. While that is indeed admirable, infrastructure remains one of the biggest hurdles when it comes to making electric cars more mainstream.

Germany is looking to tackle this issue by announcing a massive plan to place electric car chargers at all petrol stations across the country.

According to Reuters, part of the plan will also include subsidies and incentives for those citizens who chose to buy an EV. This will form a piece to a larger €130 billion stimulus package that is being proposed to kickstart the economy in the region.

While many German carmakers manufacture and sell EVs, it does not seem like many people in the country actually own one. A report from Germany’s Motor Transit Authority says 3.3 percent of cars registered in May were electric, with 2 percent of those registered in 2019 being electric too.

The addition of a far ranging network of electric car charging stations could help in getting more people to buy and use EVs, experts hope.

“We know that 97 percent of the reason why they’re not buying electric cars is range anxiety. The German move is a way to try and fix this range anxiety since it means you know a petrol station is always open,” Diego Biasi, chairman and co-founder of Quercus Real Assets, told Reuters.

With German chancellor Angela Merkel wanting to get one million charging stations by 2030, this newly outlined plan would go a long to making that a reality.

If successful, it could prove a blueprint for other countries like South Africa, where EVs are sold, but charging stations outside of dealerships and select shopping centres are hard to come by.
