Grade 4, 5, 8 and 9 learners may return to school in August

Next week on 6th July, many school children will head back to school for the first time since March, but for many more the wait continues.

According to directions gazetted by Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, Grade 4, 5, 8 and 9 learners may return to school on 3rd August.

Those in year one at schools of skills, Grades 4 and 5 at schools for learners with severe intellectual disabilities and senior groups at schools for autistic learners may also return on 3rd August.

But whether this will be the case come 3rd July remains to be seen.

We say this because there are several very vocal groups asking that schools be closed.

On Monday the Public Servants Association (PSA) of South Africa asked Motshekga to close schools as infections in the country continue to rise sharply.

The organisation argued that the rising infection rate may result in a stop-start schooling system and this will see learners falling behind. More than that, parents are also afraid to send their children to school and run the risk of them becoming infected.

Also this week One South Africa Movement’s High Court bid to stop schools from reopening was dismissed according to a report by eNCA.

Government does not have an enviable task in front of it and every decision will likely be met with harsh criticism.

For now, these are the regulations as presented by the Department of Basic Education and if anything changes we will be sure to update our readers.
