Microsoft’s Xbox Summer Game Fest will feature 60-plus downloadable demos

In the wake of COVID-19 and worldwide regulations against large gatherings, a number of gaming events have suffered and subsequently been cancelled, heading online where possible. It has meant that game developers and publishers have had to be a little more inventive in the way they present their upcoming projects, along with trying to add a bit of incentive.

That’s precisely what Microsoft has announced for its Summer Game Fest, with a Demo Event for the Xbox One going live later this month. 21st to 27th July to be more accurate, with the week-long event making more than 6o downloadable demos for upcoming Xbox titles available to players.

“We’ll have more than 60 brand-new game demos for upcoming, unreleased Xbox games available to check out for free! Look for the special Game Fest Demo tile on the Xbox One Dashboard that week to find the collection of available demos,” writes Glenn Gregory, senior product marketing manager for ID@Xbox, in a blog post.

Anyone who has attended a major gaming expo will know that demos being on the floor is nothing new, but presenting it to players in this kind of format is, and as such would offer up more opportunities to try out games that would otherwise be unavailable to many.

There are of course a few things to take note of though, before you jump into the demos later this month. The first is that they are demos, and as such are far from the finished product in some cases.

Consequently, a bit of leeway should be given, and you should not write a game off simply because the demo was lacklustre, with the same rational applying for demos that are impressive.

“Many of these demos are early, and some are for games that won’t be out for quite some time. We’ve never done this before; what that means is that you’ll get to experience these games early – some way early – which is awesome, but you should also note that these games will continue to evolve and be polished as they near release,” adds Gregory.

Some of the titles already highlighted by Microsoft for the Summer Game Fest include Cris Tales, Destroy All Humans!, Haven, Hellpoint, Skatebird, The Vale: Shadow of the Crown, Raji: An Ancient Epic, and Welcome to Elk.

The marketing manager also says that Microsoft could have between 75 and 100 downloadable demos available in that week, if everything goes according to plan, so there will definitely be plenty of content for Xbox players to mull over and try in the coming weeks.

If you’re interested in what the company is working on for its next-gen console, a separate event is being planned for that, but details on precisely when it’s happening are still to be shared.
