Fak’ugesi Festival 2020 is heading online this September

Many an event has either been cancelled or repurposed to become virtual of late, and this year’s Fak’ugesi Festival 2020 is no different, with organisers confirming that it will head online in September.

Now in its seventh year, the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and Wits School of Arts will once again play a central role in hosting the event, with this year’s theme being #POWERTOTHEPIXEL.

As in previous years, the focus this time around is on the local and African digital creativity space, showcasing what is being made, as well as making tools and insights available to others.

“This year we explore the power of the smallest unit, the pixel, to shape the reality we experience, bridge divides and bring focus to our digital creativity,” explains Tegan Bristow, Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival director.

“The Fak’ugesi Festival 2020 programme will be live and online in September and developed in partnership with Tshimologong’s Digital Content Hub. It will also have the support of Agence Française de développement (AFD), Pro Helvetia Johannesburg and partners across the region who are still to be announced,” adds Lesley Williams, CEO of Tshimologong Innovation Precinct.

In Fak’ugesi tradition, the first way that people will be able to engage with the event is by entering the poster illustration competition, with the winning design receiving a cash prize, as well as being highlighted by the event’s community.

“Our first call to action for the African digital creative community is the annual poster illustration competition. Aimed at digital artists and digital illustrators across the continent and using the theme of #POWERTOTHEPIXEL. Powering Up Africa’s Resolution, we invite Africa’s digital creatives to join the list of extraordinary artists who have brought the vision of the festival alive over the past few years,” notes Bristow.

One of the other worthwhile events taking place at Fak’ugesi this year will be a seven-day, online experiential bootcamp for digital arts.
