How to add the pronunciation of your name to LinkedIn

Recently LinkedIn added a new piece of functionality to its platform in the form of a small speaker icon next to users’ names. Clicking on this will play an audio recording of the correct pronunciation of that person’s name so that others won’t have to guess should they ever need to speak to them.

Unfortunately you can’t add your own recording from the desktop version of the site, as it is limited to the mobile app. This is presumably to ensure that some kind of recording device is present, as all phones and tablets have a microphone built in.

The steps to add your recording are as follows:

  • Download the LinkedIn app for Android or iOS, update it to the latest version, and log into your account.
  • Tap your profile picture in the top right and then on “View Profile”.
  • Click on the edit button next to your picture, the which resembles a pencil.
  • Tap on the “+ ADD NAME PRONUNCIATION” option. It’s right below the “ADD FORMER NAME” section.
  • Allow the app to access your device’s microphone.
  • Hold down the record button to record the pronunciation of your voice. It can be a maximum of 10 seconds.
  • Once you’re happy with the recording save the changes to your account.

While the above is fairly straightforward there is some customisation on offer. When the button appears there is the option to change who can hear the pronunciation.

The two options right now are “1st-degree connections only” and the other is “all LinkedIn members”. The former limits the audio playback to people you are connected with on the platform, while the latter allows anyone visiting your profile to listen.

If your recording does not appear as an icon next to your name on your profile, or the recording feature is missing from the app, it may not have been made available to your country just yet. LinkedIn says that it will be rolled out throughout July.
