Another 2600MW taken offline means possibility of loadshedding has increased

South Africans seemingly came to the party yesterday and reduced electricity consumption, avoiding loadshedding.

But now Eskom has said on Friday morning that it might be forced to implement loadshedding as it has lost a significant amount of capacity.

“Two units at the Arnot power station, as well as a unit each at Kendal, Tutuka and Majuba were taken off the grid. These removed more than 2 600MW of capacity from the system. The delayed return to service of a generation unit at the Duvha power station has also added significant pressure to the generation system,” Eskom said in a power alert.

As of Friday morning there are five generation units offline.

The utility warns that any additional breakdowns will compromise Eskom’s ability to supply electricity.

As such, Eskom has asked South Africans to reduce electricity usage between 16:00 and 22:00 on Friday afternoon and evening.

“Over the past two evenings the help of the public assisted us in avoiding the need for loadshedding,” Eskom said.

We will continue to update your throughout the course of the day regarding the power situation should Eskom announce that loadshedding will need to be implemented.
