Ubisoft Forward recap, warts and all

Ubisoft recently concluded its Forward livestream, the publisher’s replacement for all the regular events like E3 which have been cancelled this year because of COVID-19.

The games were obviously the focus of the show but there were some problems thrown in too.

A big draw for many coming to the stream was the promise of a free PC copy of Watch Dogs 2. All that was required to get the free game was to log onto your Ubisoft account on the Forward site during specific times of the livestream.

Unfortunately this was impossible. Likely due to massive server load most people were not able to log in leading to #CantLogIn trending on many social media sites as it was spammed in the live chat.

Ubisoft announced that it was aware of this issue and was working on it before before changing this up entirely:

“Don’t worry! We’ll be giving out the rewards to all of you, even if you were unable to log in successfully. Sit back and enjoy the show!,” The publisher wrote on Twitter.

You can now go to this page to claim Watch Dogs 2.

Other problems also cropped up but we’ll get to those for the specific games below. We’ll be embedding the individual trailers that were shown off but these lack some behind the scenes stuff from the livestream. A VOD of that livestream is available here complete with a pre-show.

Watch Dogs: Legion – Launches 29th October 2020

The cinematic trailer for the newest Watch Dogs was the most visually impressive part of the show, but also another sore spot.

This is because the trailer above repurposed the famous “First they came…” poem which deals with group regret, the raise of the Nazis, the Holocaust and more during World War II. Sure, some can draw parallels between what happened then and what is happening now, but in the context of this game it’s just an awful, classless look.

We won’t harp on this much more on other than to say it’s a nicely made trailer that reminds us of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and really shouldn’t have used that poem.

Those wanting to see gameplay thankfully got just that.

This second trailer lays out the setting of Legion – London following terrorists attacks which have lead the government to using a private militia to keep things in check.

As the player you’re part of a resistance that works to recruit new members, each of which have their own abilities and playstyles depending on who they are. There’s also a hitman who must be this year’s winner for most blatant John Wick knockoff.

Overall it looks like a lively time that offers some variety over the regular Ubisoft open world game.

Brawlhalla Mobile – Launches 6th August

Ubisoft’s answer to Super Smash Bros. is being ported to iOS and Android complete with custom controls and cross-play.

A unique skin can also be unlocked by registering for the mobile launch on the Brawlhalla website.

Might and Magic Era of Chaos – Out now

The venerable Might and Magic series was recently brought back as a mobile game on iOS and Android, and is already available.

Reception to the game so far has been mixed but, as it’s free, it doesn’t cost anything to try it out.

Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad – No release date

Yet another mobile game but one that piqued our interest despite the fact that it looks so much like Fortnite.

Elite Squad combines characters from the various Ubisoft Tom Clancy games. In the trailer you can see some recognisable names from Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell. Ghost Recon and The Division are also mixed in there too.

Unfortunately there’s no actual gameplay but interested players can register for the game to receive some DLC.

Rainbow Six Siege – Out now

Nothing new was shown off for Rainbow Six. Instead the Forward stream just included the above highlights video as a retrospective of the game so far.

Hyper Scape – Out now

The newest battle royale on the scene now has a cinematic trailer involving a drone chair, someone pulling a gun on a Boston Dynamics robot, and a cow with a VR headset. Good stuff.

If you’ve read or watched Ready Player One, first we apologise, but secondly this trailer hits all the same beats of that piece of fiction, just replace an Easter Egg hunt with a battle royale it seems.

While Hyper Scape is already out and gameplay of it is all over the internet, the Forward stream did show some of it off in the above trailer as a bit of a taster.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – Launches 17th November 2020

After around 40 minutes of Valhalla leaking recently we now have some gameplay right from the source.

As expected this looks far smoother than the leaks. Is this because the leaks are from an earlier build or was the game was dolled up up for the event? Who knows.

This new trailer shows off raiding parts of England as the invading Vikings, settlement development and the claim that there is more enemy variety than any other Assassin’s Creed game. These can be taken on with a variety of old and new combat options including the familiar stealth route.

What made us most excited is dual wielding shields. Ever since the days of BMing with riot shields in Counter-Strike we’ve enjoyed the inclusion of shields in games.

Far Cry 6 – Launches 16th February 2021

The above would have been the big worldwide reveal of Far Cry 6 and the inclusion of famous actor Giancarlo Esposito, but this too was leaked.

Esposito perfectly plays Far Cry’s specific type of comic evil villain and this trailer is the perfect bookend for Forward as it matches the Watch Dogs Legion cinematic in quality.

Oh, and that child may be Vaas from Far Cry 3.

Overall Ubisoft Forward was a rather standard industry showing that wouldn’t have been out of place at an event like E3. It’s good to know that some things are trucking along as usual.
