Canon reveals local pricing and availability of its new EOS R5 and R6 cameras

Last week Canon revealed some new camera hardware during its REIMAGINE live streamed global event. It did not disappoint, with Canon revealing two new eye catching mirrorless cameras in the form of the EOS R5 and EOS R6. The former in particular caught our attention, as did its Stateside price tag.

At the time we did not have South African pricing or availability for either of the new mirrorless cameras, but that has changed today, with Canon confirming that local launch windows and recommended retail pricing for the pair.

Added to this is how much some of the new lenses for these cameras are expected to sell for, as well as a lens kit for the “cheaper” EOS R6.

So how much will these cameras cost you? Well the flagship EOS R5 is expected to retail for R88 999 for the body alone, with the camera also anticipated to be available for purchase come August. A precise date is unknown, but given that it is landing next month, pre-orders from local retailers should be appearing soon.

If you are gawking at the price, it should be noted that this is a mirrorless camera designed with professionals in mind, many of which need the best gear possible in order to perform their jobs.

We have not shot with the EOS R5 yet, but given its specifications, this could very well be Canon’s version of the DSLR killer, which is how we described Fujifilm’s massively impressive X-H1.

As for the EOS R6, it is expected to land on our shores in September, carrying with it a R52 499 for the body only. There is also a lens kit version on the way, featuring an RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 lens IS ISM, totalling R60 999.

Canon has also revealed pricing for some of the new lenses showcased last week too. Like the new mirrorless cameras, these are not on the cheap side either. Recommended pricing is as follows, with all of them expected to launch locally in August:

  • Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-5.6 – R59 999
  • Canon RF 600mm – R15 999
  • Canon RF 800mm – R20 999
  • Canon RF Extender 1.4x – R11 999
  • Canon RF Extender 2.0x – R14 999

With the Fujifilm’s X-Series and Nikon’s Z models dominating the space as far as mirrorless cameras go, especially on the professional end of the spectrum, it looks like Canon has thrown down the gauntlet and has not been shy when pricing its products.
