Huawei will review UK’s decision to ban purchase of equipment

On Tuesday afternoon the UK government announced that Huawei 5G equipment must be removed from UK networks by 2027.

As part of that announcement, the National Cyber Security Centre also advised that the purchase of Huawei 5G equipment would be banned on 31st December 2020.

As you might expect, Huawei is not at all happy with the announcement.

“This disappointing decision is bad news for anyone in the UK with a mobile phone. It threatens to move Britain into the digital slow lane, push up bills and deepen the digital divide. Instead of ‘levelling up’ the government is levelling down and we urge them to reconsider,” said Edward Brewster, spokesperson for Huawei in the UK.

One of the main arguments of the National Cyber Security Centre and Cyber Security Council was that they were not confident that Huawei could maintain its supply chain given the latest restrictions from the US. Huawei refutes this statement.

“We remain confident that the new US restrictions would not have affected the resilience or security of the products we supply to the UK. Regrettably our future in the UK has become politicized, this is about US trade policy and not security,” said Brewster.

That last bit about security is rather notable. While the UK government did mention security several times in its announcement, the crux of the decision to ban Huawei equipment is supply-chain related.

Nevertheless, Huawei says it will be reviewing the decision taken on Tuesday.

“We will conduct a detailed review of what today’s announcement means for our business here and will work with the UK government to explain how we can continue to contribute to a better connected Britain,” the spokesperson concluded.
