Sony reportedly planning to produce 50 percent more PS5 consoles by year’s end

Prior to Sony revealing its new PlayStation 5 last month, there were reports that the Japanese company would be limiting production of its PS5 consoles, with the impact of COVID-19 playing a factor. Now new reports suggest Sony will actually be looking to ramp up production by as much as 50 percent.

According to Nikkei and Bloomberg (Japanese), we could see between 9 or 10 million PS5 consoles be manufactured for sale by the end of 2020. This would represent a 50 percent increase from the 6 million that Sony had initially outlined.

For now though, this remains a rumour, with Sony yet to officially comment on the matter at the time of writing.

As for why the aforementioned publications reported on a rise on production levels, it looks like COVID-19 is once again playing a role. This time around though, it is the fact that many people across the globe will still be limited to being indoors most of the time due to lockdowns or quarantines in their respective countries.

This has therefore presented an opportunity for Sony, as more people at home, means a greater desire for entertainment.

As The Verge points out though, this increased rate of production would prove quite ambitious, especially as the PS4 sold 4.2 million worldwide in the space of two months, after launching in November of 2013.

As such, it remains to be seen whether Sony indeed plans to sell the previously quoted 6 million consoles before the end of 2020, or whether it is ramping up production now in order to cater for those consumers in 2021, once we’ve hopefully got a better handle on COVID-19.

Either way, much of this will depend on the pricing of the console and precise launch date, neither of which have been confirmed as of yet.
