UCT gives undergrads an extra month to apply

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has moved the final day for undergraduate admission a month out due to, you guessed it, the coronavirus.

“Undergraduate applications were initially scheduled to close on 31 July 2020. However, given the impact of COVID-19 on the application cycle for admission in 2021, and in fairness to undergraduate applicants, the closing date for undergraduate applications has been extended to 31 August 2020. This extension in no way affects applications for admission to any postgraduate programme or the Semester Study Abroad programme,” writes Elijah Moholola, senior manager: media liaison and social media of the communication and marketing department.

Aside from the new date Moholola also makes mention of the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs), which were also abandoned as admission criteria by the university in May.

Back in early June the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) also announced that it would be ignoring the NBTs for admissions in 2021.

“At the time of making this change on 30 May, UCT took the decision to review the rest of the undergraduate admission criteria and consider amendments that may compensate for the withdrawal of the NBTs. The review is underway, and the amended criteria will be announced shortly,” Moholola concludes.

With COVID-19 showing no signs of slowing in South Africa these kinds of sudden changes and shakeups will unfortunately be a part of life for the foreseeable future.

UCT isn’t the only university to moving dates around. Just recently the University of South Africa (Unisa) had to extend its own deadlines for releasing previous semester exam results as well as registering for its second semester.
