Samsung Care+ is pricey but surprisingly worth the cost

As we have the Galaxy Z Flip in for review our mind has been caught wondering about how much that magnificent display costs to repair.

The good news is that the Galaxy Z Flip comes with one year of Samsung Care+ which offers a repair of the screen, the back glass and the battery (so long as the screen is being replaced as well).

Where folks do get tripped up, however, is in the cost of the repair.

One would assume that taking out Samsung Care+ grants you a free repair, but that isn’t the case.

In fact, you would still need to pay a repair fee on top of your existing Samsung Care+ coverage.

What’s more is that one has to be incredibly careful about the cover you take.

As you can see there are two sorts of cover: Samsung Care+ and Samsung Care+ Premium.

The first option is the most basic covering screen, back glass and battery repairs. Samsung Care+ Premium however covers all of those three as well as mainboard damage, liquid damage and external casing damage.

As you can see from the table above the Care+ Premium packages carry a once off fee rather than monthly. This is pricey and will be for many folks.

So what about that repair fee?

Device Repair Fee

Galaxy S20 Ultra, S20+, S20, S10+, S10, S10e, Note 10+, Note 10, Note 9, Note 8, S9+, S9, S8+, S8 R999

Galaxy A31, A30s, A30, A21s, A20, A11, A10s, A10, A01, J4 Core, A2 Core R499

All of this is starting to sound expensive and we agree it is, but the alternative is far worse.

Using a Galaxy S10+ as an example we’d pay R999 for Samsung Care+ and then R999 when we needed a repair. That comes to a cool total of R1 998.

The alternative is looking to a third party, so we did.

Local repairer Cell Clinic gave us a rough quotation of R5 300 for a screen repair using genuine Samsung parts. Another local repairer, The Real Repair Company, lists pricing for a Samsung Galaxy S10+ screen repair and replacement at R4 999, also using original parts.

Samsung Care+ is the better option then looking purely at finances, but there is something of a catch.

Samsung Care+ must be taken up within 30 days of purchasing a device so if you purchased a new device a few months ago you may not be eligible for Samsung Care+.

Of course, Samsung Care+ does make fixing your devices more affordable, but you have to register for the coverage within a certain time. We also feel like Samsung needs to make it clearer that there is an additional fee payable at repair.

The way it’s done on its website is simply unclear and confusing.

If you’ve recently purchased a Samsung device and want to take up Samsung Care+, you can do so at this URL. From what we’ve seen, it’s probably the cheapest way to make sure your phone is repaired with trusted parts.
