Rocket League won’t be purchasable on Steam after it goes F2P

Developer Psyonix has announced some big changes coming to its golden goose Rocket League, with the game becoming free to play this year, as well as no longer being available for purchase on that platform.

“Later this summer”, which is between now and the end of September, Rocket League will become free to play. When this happens the game will also launch on the Epic Games Store.

“Once Rocket League goes free to play, anyone who already owns Rocket League on any platform (including Steam) will be able to play and enjoy the game with full support for future updates and features. However, the Steam version will no longer be available to download for new players. To put it simply, wherever you play now (including Steam), you’ll still be able to play in the future,” reads a release from Psyonix.

This should mean that those who own the game on Steam will still be able to download and play it there, but anyone hoping to buy the game on the platform (or get it for free later) will not be able to do so.

These changes also include cross-platform progression tied to your Epic Games account. More information will be released about this later but it looks like you’ll be able to play the game across PC and console as long as you’re using the same account, while still keeping all your progress.

Speaking of progress all the items in existing players’ inventories will be kept once the switch over to F2P is complete.

To help keep those players onboard during this time a bunch of rewards will be waiting for them. Anyone who has owned the game before it becomes free will be granted “Legacy status” that entitles them to the following:

  • All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free to play
  • “Est. 20XX” title that displays the first year you played Rocket League
  • 200+ Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner
  • Faded Cosmos Boost*

*The Faded Cosmos Boost, which you can see in the header image above, also requires that owners of the game play online before the F2P move over.
