Telkom says it will work with customers as it shifts away from copper

Telkom has been pushing to ditch its aging copper infrastructure in favour of fibre internet connectivity.

Of course, this is concerning for those who are not yet serviced by fibre connectivity in their area, but still rely on Telkom for internet.

While the telco has said that a move away from copper is compulsory, it has also said it won’t leave its customers behind.

“Customers can rest assured that Telkom won’t leave them in the lurch. While the move away from copper-based internet is compulsory, we are here to work with customers to find an alternative connectivity solution that best suits their needs. If they aren’t on board with fibre, there are many other options available to choose from, such as wireless LTE and Fixed Line Lookalike,” explains executive of product development and management at Telkom, Steven White.

However, White also urges customers to get in touch with a Telkom agent should they have any concerns and to discuss their options.

As for the cost of upgrading, as this is Telkom’s decision and not yours, Telkom says it will waive the cost of installing your fibre connectivity.

“We want all those affected to know that we are waiving the cost of installation. So, essentially, customers can benefit from an incredible upgrade without having to pay a cent in the process. The only cost involved will be the monthly cost of the new internet package that each user selects,” explains White.

When Telkom envisions copper to be completely abandoned is unclear at this stage.

The firm has been working to move away from copper infrastructure for both internet and voice communications since 2019.
