LEGO’s $350 grand piano leans on your phone for music

Back in January of 2019 we brought you the news that a playable piano of sorts may become a LEGO set in the future. Now that future is here as LEGO has announced set number 21323: Grand Piano.

This set has 3 662 pieces and when it launches overseas on 1st August it will cost $349.99 / £319.99 / €349.99 depending on where you live. Here in South Africa our prices usually fall closer to the UK ones and, at the time of writing, the direct conversion from the Pound put the price at around R6 741.

For all your money those thousands of pieces build a scale piano that is 22.5 centimetres high, 30.5 centimetres wide and 35.5 centimetres deep. These measurements are, however, when the instrument is all closed. When you open the top lid to view the hammers and strings, and pop out the adjustable stool, it will take up more space.

There are 25 keys in the assembly here, all connected to a mechanism that can easily be removed from the final build or connected to a a motor as part of a Powered Up system.

Powered Up is LEGO’s system of compatible motors, sensors, small computers and software that allow you to add electronics to its toys. For the piano the Powered Up app can be used to simulate playing music on the piano. The motor can be used to move the keys so you can imitate a self-playing piano, or you can hit the keys yourself for the app to make music.

Yes software will have to handle the actual music because, at least right now, LEGO has no real way to make music using plastic alone.

“Feel the pride of building a sophisticated, brick-built version of a concert grand piano that you can actually play music with! Recreate the hammer action of each piano key, the moving pedal and authentic details such as the propped-open top lid and fallboard. Turn on the motor and then you are all set to play wonderful music – select user play on the free LEGO Powered Up app to play the notes yourself or activate auto play and just listen,” reads the sets description.

Reading some of the smaller details on the product page and we noticed that the app only supports four songs. We have to hope that more will be released or can be recorded by users.
