Validity of expired driver’s licences extended during lockdown

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula and the Department of Transport have gazetted rules regarding the expiry of driver’s licences. More specifically they have extended the validity of driver’s licences that have expired during lockdown.

To that end, if your licence has indeed expired during lockdown, which began on 26th March, you will only be required to renew it next year.

“All learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits, which expired from 26 March up to 31 August 2020, are extended to 31 January 2021,” the gazetted rules explain.

Interestingly, the department has outlined the expiry period from 26th March to 31st August. Whether that is indeed the date that government aims to call an end to lockdown, remains to be seen.

The department also adds that all motor vehicle discs, temporary permits and roadworthy certificates, which expired between 26th March 2020 and 31st May 2020 are deemed valid until 31st August 2020.

We for one are quite pleased to see this changes come about, as dealing with government departments has proved difficult to date. Not to mention the risk you run when applying in person in potentially contracting COVID-19.

Hopefully more common sense gazettes will be forthcoming from other departments in coming days and weeks.

If you are indeed planning to renew your licence once lockdown ends, we’ve have a handy guide here.
