As each new day passes, South Africa’s grip on the COVID-19 pandemic shows no signs of improving. This as the the latest statistics released by the National Department of Health (NDoH) saw some concerning numbers recorded yesterday.
To that end 7 120 new infections have been registered, with fatalities resulting from COVID-19 in South Africa rising by 298. This brings the total number of deaths in the country to 7 067. At the time of writing, the number of positive cases is currently 452 529.
These numbers will likely be updated overnight or early tomorrow morning, so we should see whether the worrying trend with regard to deaths has continued.
Breaking down the number of fatalities by province, the NDoH has sated that 91 are from the Free State, 77 from the Eastern Cape, 61 from Gauteng, 36 from Western Cape, 13 from Mpumalanga, 11 from the North West and nine from KwaZulu-Natal.
As always, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize tried to console those South Africans who lost someone near to them.
“We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased,” he said.
Shifting to the number of infections and testing, not much has changed from yesterday in terms of the provinces that have been worst affected.
Gauteng remains the epicentre with 162 319 recorded infections since the pandemic began, with the Western Cape at 92 600, Eastern Cape registering 74 231 and KwaZulu-Natal sitting at 65 982.
The recovery rate has picked up though, with 274 925 recoveries, translating to a 61 percent recovery rate.
