R30K SA Game Jam is happening in September

The annual SA Game Jam, as hosted by famous Broforce developer Free Lives, is happening again in 2020.

“Our mission is to encourage more South Africans to try their hand at game making, and to support emerging and established developers. A rising tide raises all ships, you know? Whether you’re a first timer or an old timer, SA GAME JAM is for you!” reads the description for the contest.

On 25th September 18:00 local time entrants will have until 28th September midnight to make a game in one of three categories based on their level of expertise – professional, hobbyist or student.

The categories for winners, as well as the prize amounts, are as follows:

  • Student (currently studying in any field): R3 000
  • Hobbyist (not working in the game development industry): R3 000
  • Diversity (please contact admins for clarity): R3 000
  • Best Art: R2 500
  • Best Audio: R2 500
  • Technical Excellence: R2 500
  • Best Narrative: R2 500
  • Overall Winner: R5 000

Teams or individuals can participate with submissions needing to go through the official itch.io page here. We suggest reading the fine print on that page for the specifics if you’re thinking about entering.

Much of the communication for the event, as well as workshops closer to the start, will be taking place on the Make Games SA Discord server.

We’re hoping to play some locally made titles from the jam, especially because the physical rAge Expo isn’t happening this year, but instead will be hosting things online. The expo is the setting for the Home Coded stand where you could traditionally play South African games that were still in development.

It’s where we first played the now launched Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse and we’ve been jonesing to play some more early local games. Hopefully the SA Game Jam can fill that void once the event is over and the experimental games are available to the public.
