Huawei has two new 5G-supporting smartphones ready to launch locally – the P40 Pro+ and P40 Lite 5G.

Both devices are currently available to order on the Mustek-powered Huawei Online store, and now give the Chinese firm a new addition in mid-range 5G phone market, as well as another offering for flagships.

To be fair, it is the P40 Lite 5G that has grabbed our attention, namely because of the price tag. To that end it is listed for retail at R9 499 (RRP), which would make it the least expensive 5G smartphone available in the country at the time of writing. Previously that position was held by the LG Velvet 5G, which debuted a couple of weeks ago.

In terms of features, the P40 Lite 5G is sporting the octa-core Kirin 820 processor, which is the 5G SoC that HiSilicon debuted earlier in the year. Added to this is a generous 6GB of RAM, with 128GB onboard storage and a 4 00mAh battery powering things.

It is not just the chipset that differentiates the 5G-capable P40 Lite from the standard flavour, with the former sporting a 64MP primary, 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP bokeh and 2MP marco lenses for the rear camera setup. The front facing selfie option is a 16MP lens.

The display is slightly larger at 6.5″, along with the a 2400×1080 resolution being the other key differences.

In terms of price, the standard flavour retails for R6 499, which means you’re paying R3k difference. It should also be noted that the Huawei Store’s listing for the standard model also included a couple of accessories, so it remains to be seen whether the company will be sweetening the deal with a bundle for the 5G version.

As for the P40 Pro+, it is the same one that debuted alongside the other P40 series devices prior to lockdown. It costs R28 999, with the key differences being the camera array and the ceramic back cover, which is only available in the black colour option for now.

With the impressive P40 Pro 5G being quite similar, we’ll have to see whether South Africans want to buy this new flagship phone. Right now, the smaller, slightly lesser specced P40 Lite 5G is the more tempting of the two, given it is a 5G capable phone for under R10k.
