Huawei Pay expected to launch in South Africa during Q3 this year

In the world of local tech journalists and media, there are always a few questions that routinely get asked at briefings. These included when local Microsoft servers would be spun up, along with when Huawei Pay will be launched in South Africa.

With Azure data centres taking care of the former, that only leaves Huawei Pay to worry about. In the past there have been confirmations that is was “coming soon” or “being worked on”, but now Huawei Mobile South Africa has indeed confirmed that it will launch in 2020 locally.

In Q3 to be exact, according to Huawei Consumer Business Group VP for MEA, Zhao Likun, who noted that it would be made available in coming months during an online briefing for local media.

Unfortunately, the VP would not put forward a more precise launch date, but having it narrowed down to a quarter is at least welcome.

This as Huawei has been working with local financial institutions to bring more mobile apps to the AppGallery platform, as well as strengthening partnerships in that regard.

Add to that the growing popularity of contactless payments amid the COVID-19 and lockdown, and making a solution like Huawei Pay available makes sense. Especially as Samsung Pay is the only mobile payment solution offered locally by any of the globe’s top three smartphone vendors.

Details as to which devices it will be made available are yet to be confirmed, so it remains to be seen if it will feature on both Google-based and HMS smartphones.

Huawei Mobile South Africa CTO, Akhram Mohamed, also noted that the company is working on making Huawei Pay available on wearable devices, but a launch in that regard is harder to pin down right now.

Regardless, when it does launch, we’ll need to find another go-to question for future media briefings to ask spokespeople.
