Buying Barbies in August will contribute to South African charity

If you were thinking of buying Barbies, August is the best time to do so as sales of the popular brand will result in toys going to a good cause in South Africa.

“For every eligible career [Barbie] doll purchased at Toys R Us between 3 August to 31 August 2020, Barbie will donate a doll to the Children’s Hospital Trust and Red Cross War Memorial Hospital,” the South African arm of Toys R Us said on Twitter.

The Children’s Hospital Trust works through the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital to treat children, especially those from impoverished areas across the African continent.

The eligible Barbies which can be bought during August to support this cause can be found on this splash page or in the list below, along with the prices of each.

It seems that most of the toys are “assortments”, which means purchasing one will get you a random pick from a certain selection.

These toys are branded with the “Thank You Heroes” and “Play It Forward” initiatives from parent company Mattel. This highlights the important work of people like nurses, doctors, delivery drivers and more during the COVID-19 pandemic with proceeds used to help organisations overseas.

These kinds of efforts are usually kept overseas so it’s nice to see them make the trip across the sea to benefit similar initiatives in South Africa and Africa as a whole.
