Apple’s given its 27″ iMac a refresh for 2020

This morning has seen some rather interesting news come out of Cupertino as Apple’s marketing head Phil Schiller is being made a fellow at the company. The other bit of news involves the firm’s iMac offerings, with a refreshed 27″ model now available for purchase for those Stateside, before it makes its way to other parts of the globe.

We’re focusing on the iMac news for now, as it remains to be seen how Apple’s marketing will change now that Greg Joswiak has been appointed to Schiller’s role.

According to Apple, this latest refresh makes this 27″ iMac, “By far the most powerful and capable iMac ever.” We know that this is a rhetoric that Apple has used for more recent iterations of the iPhone, so let’s see what has been improved on this All-In-One (AIO) desktop device.

In terms of the processor options, Intel is the supplier here, with both hexa and octa-core 10th Gen options available depending on the specification per region. A 10-core option is also being made available, with Apple noting that it is designed with professional creatives in mind. To that it the Intel chipset yields 65 better CPU performance and turbo boosting of up to 5.0Ghz.

On the graphics side of things, AMD is the go to, with Radeon Pro 5000 series pairing with the newly updated iMac. Added to this is the option to setup the device with 16GB of RAM, which is also a first for the iMac lineup. Whether this specific RAM orientation will be available worldwide, remains to be seen.

As for other key features, the new iMac sports a 5K display that True Tone technology and 500 nits of brightness. Added to this is the upgradable option of nano-texture glass, which Apple first introduced on its Pro Display XDR panel.

There’s also a T2 security chip for enhanced encryption of data stored on the device, as well as up to 8TB of onboard SSD storage, but it’s still unclear if these specifications will be made available locally.

If you are Stateside, however, the newly refreshed 27″ iMac starts at $1 799 (~R30 976), but will likely cost a fare bit more once all the bells and whistles are chosen.
