Samsung’s plan to lead the mobile market when it comes to foldable devices shows no signs of slowing down, as the company followed up its recent upgrade of the Z Flip to a 5G flavour, with a new iteration of the Galaxy Fold.

The new device in question is the Galaxy Z Fold2, so it looks like Z will be the designator for these types of foldable devices moving forward.

With the Galaxy Fold still fresh in the memory, having only been released locally late last year following a slew of manufacturing and durability issues, there is no doubt hope that the Z Fold2 will prove a far more robust offering.

It is something that Samsung acknowledged in its Galaxy Unpacked event earlier today, and potentially why all the specific components utilised in the device are yet to surface on Samsung Mobile’s press site.

As such it looks like the company wants to focus on the design improvements that have been made, instead of the specs, so let’s do that.

What has been improved upon precisely? Well the hinge has been wholly reengineered, and for good reason as it was heavily criticised by overseas reviewers who got early access to the Galaxy Fold.

The design borrows inspiration from the Z Flip and also introduces a miniature brush mechanism called “the sweeper” which ensures no dust or fine particles work their way into the central crease of the Z Fold2’s foldable screen.

Whether this innovation yields the desired result, remains to be seen, but we’re sure early reviewers will be quick to point it out should it happen.

The other significant change in terms of design is the new cover display present, which is 6.2″ offering that’s larger than the 4.6″ option on the predecessor. This should offer more screen real estate for those who want to use the Z Fold2 when folded into a more familiar touch bar form factor of the Galaxy S series.

When unfolded, Samsung has ensured that the Z Fold2 features more generous dimensions too, with it measuring 7.6″ diagonally. The display itself is also said to be more durable than the previous iteration, but again, reviewers and consumers will provide more accurate feedback in that regard.

Looking at the features listed above, as well as the specifications below, it seems like the Galaxy Z Fold2 is what the original Fold should have been. The only remaining factor is price, with that likely forthcoming on 1st September, when regional pre-orders and more details about this foldable phone will be revealed by Samsung.

Venturing an educated guess based off the predecessor’s R43 999 price tag, it would surprise us if the Z Fold2 is north of the R50k mark.
