Doom Eternal and ESO will have free upgrades to next gen consoles

Publisher Bethesda has announced that two of its big games – Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) – will be free on the next generation of consoles for those who already own the titles.

That means that PlayStation 4 owners will get it on PlayStation 5, and Xbox One owners get it for the Xbox Series X.

“We’ll have more information to share in the coming weeks and months about The Elder Scrolls Online and DOOM Eternal on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 including expected release windows and a list of enhancements. And while we don’t have any news to share just yet on our remaining catalogue of titles, we can confirm we are committed to offer free upgrades for current generation console owners of existing Bethesda titles we bring forward into the next generation of consoles,” reads the announcement.

Quakecon at Home, the digital version of the famous event, is being streamed on Twitch from today until Sunday, 9th August. We wouldn’t be surprised if more details about these free upgrades, as well as other Besthesda games, are announced over the weekend.

Another point of interest with this news is the mention of “backwards compatibility”. No details are provided for this inclusion but we have to assume that it means your saves from the previous consoles will carry over to the new ones, presumably by way of players’ Bethesda accounts.

Even Doom Eternal, a single-player focused game with a mostly forgotten multiplayer, has a lot of unlockable loot that we’re sure everyone would be happy to see carried over should they want to keep playing on a new console. As an MMO Elder Scrolls Online will especially need this support as asking players to start from scratch would be unthinkable.

These two games join a long list of titles already confirmed to be getting this kind of freebie. Games like Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel’s Avengers and many more will support this next gen feature.
