COVID-19 causes another game delay as Halo Infinite pushes to 2021

If you’ve grown tired of seeing the words “COVID-19” and “delay” in 2020, look away now as Halo Infinite has been pushed back into 2021.

The game was supposed to launch this year in the holiday season, likely to line up with the release of the Xbox Series X which also still has no set date for its arrival.

While the reception to the big gameplay demo in July was mixed to say the least (see the embed at the bottom of this story), a few key factors have been mentioned as the cause of the delay on top of the ongoing pandemic. Crunch has been another factor here.

“I want to acknowledge the hard work from our team at 343 Industries, who have remained committed to making a great game and finding solutions to development challenges. However, it is not sustainable for the well-being of our team or the overall success of the game to ship it this holiday,” says Chris Lee, studio head at 343 Industries.

Seemingly in reaction to this new the official Xbox Wire site released a new blog post detailing the “thousands of games spanning four generations” that will be available on the Series X when it launches.

We have to assume this is some consolation prize, basically saying “hey, you can’t play Halo Infinite on the new console but there’s all of this to play!”. While backwards compatibility is something we’re looking forward to in the next generation, we know that there are going to be a lot of Halo fans saddened by the news.

But, as usual, delays give games the chance to be the best possible versions that the developers can make without forcing said developers to work for unhealthy amounts of time. We’re sure most will also prefer this delay to an early launch of an unfinished product too.
