Eskom warns that power system is “severely constrained” following generating unit delays

The next 24 hours could prove significant for Eskom following a power alert from the utility on Twitter earlier this afternoon. It notes that the country’s power system is “severely constrained”, while also urging the public to reduce its power consumption at this time.

The reason for the severe constraining is the result of generating units failing to return to service, the utility explained in the power alert pasted below. More specifically five units were delayed, with a further two units tripping.

“The return to service of two generating units at the Tutuka power station has been delayed, as well as a unit each at Duvha, Matimba and Kusile power stations. An additional unit at Tutuka tripped this afternoon while Kusile’s Unit 1 has been shut down. Eskom teams are hard at work to return these units to service,” the utility has explained.

Precisely when these units will be restored remains to be seen, but they are responsible for a massive rise in the amount of unavailable generating power, according to Eskom.

As such, should the units not be returned in time or South Africa’s usage show no signs of decreasing over the coming hours, it seems like the chances of loadshedding being implemented are high.

That said, Eskom has not alluded to or confirmed loadshedding at this stage.
