Instagram adds QR code functionality to launch profiles from camera apps

Instagram users across the globe will be waking up to a new feature, as the ability to create a QR code has been added to the mobile version of the application. This functionality was initially tested out with users in Japan late last year, and now it is being ported to the wider Instagram community.

Instagram notes that these user created QR codes will also be supported by third-party camera apps, so it should launch your profile when scanned.

As for why this feature is rolling out, it looks like businesses stand to gain from it, with Instagram hoping that business owners use the QR code to help potential customers head to their profile.

It may also prove an interesting avenue for content creators and influencers on the platform, especially when it comes to a product or merchandise that they may be planning to promote.

This isn’t the first time that Instagram has utilised a QR code system, having developed its own system called Nametags, which was only supported by in-app camera on Instagram. The social media platform has noted that Nametags will cease to exist as it transitions to this new feature.

In the coming weeks and months, it should be interesting to see how the new QR code system is used by those on Instagram. A clever use of it, spurred by COVID-19, is restaurants creating QR codes for customers to scan and view a digital version of their menu instead of a physical one, as The Verge notes.

As such, it would not surprise us to see more apps and platforms integrate QR code functionality in the post-COVID-19 era.
