2021’s iPhone may have simpler battery to compensate for 5G

There could be some changes on the way for next year’s iPhone, according to reports from noted industry analyst, Ming Chi-Kuo. These rumoured details pertain to the battery design of the iPhone, which could change in order to accommodate the rising costs of 5G components within the device.

As we’ve seen with other manufacturers, particularly when it comes to flagship phones, the 5G flavours often carry a higher premium in terms of pricing.

In order to ensure that Apple does not scare off consumers with the price of a 5G-supporting iPhone lineup (which has never stopped it before to be honest), Kuo tells MacRumors that next year’s iPhone batteries will see a 30 to 40 percent decrease in price due to design changes,

According to the analyst, this is an apparent step to offset some of the additional costs that a 5G device would require. To that end, he tells MacRumors that the, “adoption of Sub-6GHz 5G technology will increase Apple’s costs by $75–$85, while millimeter wave technology will incur a $125–$135 cost for Apple, so the company is cutting costs on other components wherever it can.”

While an attempt to look for value where it can is admirable, based off of Kuo’s comments, it looks like next year’s iPhones will still command a sizeable fee.

There is also the considerable matter of how a new battery design will impact performance of the device, along with battery life itself. If either of those elements take a significant dip, then the 5G functionality would be for nought in our opinion.

That said, while Kuo is a reliable source on such matters, these are still rumours, and we’d have to wait until 2021’s iPhones are revealed before we pass judgement.

Either way, it seems like the push for 5G functionality on an iPhone will result in some give and take from Apple.
