COVID-19 in South Africa: 24th August

This past weekend offered a reprieve from the recent loadshedding as Eskom appears to have its generating units under a semblance of control. On the coronavirus front, the country’s drop to level 2 lockdown has not seen a notable rise in the number of new daily infections for COVID-19 in South Africa.

That said, it is linked to how many tests the National Department of Health (NDoH) can process, so it remains to be seen if South Africa has indeed past its peak.

According to the latest statistics revealed by the NDoH, the country is still fighting the spread of the virus, but the number of new infections have dropped significantly. To that end, the past 24 hours have seen 2 728 new cases reported, resulting in a total to date of 609 773.

As always, the NDoH has highlighted the high number of recoveries too, which currently sit at 506 470, translating to a recovery rate of 83.05 percent. While this is indeed good news, the number of fatalities has continued to climb and now register at 13 059 as related to COVID-19 in South Africa.
