Woza Matrics is a free 12-week TV initiative to help Grade 12 learners

The COVID-19 pandemic and national lockdown has had a chaotic impact on the South African education system, with Grade 12 learners being the most heavily affected due to the interruptions to the curriculum.

While it remains to be seen how this will impact exams at the end of the year for these learners, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has launched a new TV initiative called Woza Matrics.

According to Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, Woza Matrics is a 12-week long dedicated channel for education content aimed at assisting learners as they prepare for the end of year examinations.

The channel will start on 1st September and will be available on SABC 3, on all DStv packages and on Openview (Channel 122) from 8:00 to 10:00 and 13:00 to 15:00, seven days a week. Added to this, the content will be freely available via Catch Up on the DStv Now mobile app.

The minister adds that subjects covered by Woza Matrics will include Maths, Life Sciences, Geography, Physical Science, Accounting, Economics, Maths Literacy, English First Additional Language, History and Business Studies.

“This initiative has come at the right time when we are working to get schooling back on track. Matric is always stressful but 2020 has been filled with unusual stresses. I want to congratulate all our Grade 12 learners and their families for the perseverance and determination,” the minister notes.

“It is abundantly clear that additional support is required for learners and we will continue to provide this. There are a few months left before the end of the year and Woza Matrics will give learners the support they need to prepare for the final exams,” she adds.

As no content has aired as of yet, it is still unclear whether the dedicated channel will work as intended, but the DBE notes that its development is thanks to a collaboration between itself and the National Education Collaboration Trust, along with educational content providers including Digicampus, Mindset and Monyetla Trust, the Programme for Improved Learning Outcomes (PILO), and others.

In order to stay up to date with schedules for content, we advise following the Woza Matrics Twitter page for regular updates.

While the efficacy of such an initiative is yet to be determined, it is certainly something we’d like to see in place post-2020, as well as expanded to cover other Primary and High School Grades.
