Surprise: DRM-free Control is coming to GOG

Remedy Entertainment’s Control has been in the news a lot recently and now today again with the announcement that it will be on GOG.

As with all GOG games this means no DRM, so it’s the absolute best place to buy it if intrusive third party software is most important to you.

“A corruptive presence has invaded the Federal Bureau of Control… Only you have the power to stop it. Experience a third-person action-adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Coming Soon,” reads the announcement from GOG.

The GOG store page for the game is up but, strangely, the release dates is 10th September. This is odd as today, 27th August, is when the Ultimate Edition of the game launches and it marks the end of the Epic Games Store exclusivity for the PC version, and the Steam version becomes available.

You’d think that the GOG version would launch on the same day, but we have to imagine that developer Remedy Entertainment and publisher 505 Games want to get as many sales as possible for the new paid AWE expansion before it’s available DRM-free. That being said we doubt the pirates out there will have any trouble getting it before 10th September.

As for why Control has been in the news so much recently, it has mostly been negative. The announcement of the Ultimate Edition – which combines all the free updates and the two paid expansions – came with the news that early adopters of the game would need to buy this new version if they wanted an upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ports.

This is on top of the bad taste that the game left in the mouth of PC players who had to buy the game on the Epic Games Store up until now if they wanted to experience Control.

It’s unfortunate that all these business and market decisions have gotten in the way of Control, which is still highly recommended on our side. The exclusivity problems and the need for more purchases for next gen may outweigh its arrival on Steam and GOG, however.
