Samsung begins mass production of its new 16GB DRAM for flagship phones

Memory is far from the sexiest thing when to comes to smartphones, but any worthwhile phone experience is made better when the processor and RAM work in harmony. To that end Samsung has revealed its new 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM, which is the third generation 10nm manufactured offering.

It also makes use of an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography manufacturing process, making it the South Korean firm’s first memory to do so.

For those unfamiliar with EUV, it utilises lasers and light-sensitive chemicals to etch the architecture of the RAM. This has helped the new offering deliver the highest mobile memory performance and largest capacity that Samsung has mustered to date.

The end goal, according to Samsung is to empower 5G and AI-specific features in the next generation of smartphones. As such, the firm has it outlined for use in flagship devices, which means we could see it inside of next year’s Galaxy S and Note devices, alongside Exynos or Qualcomm silicon.

“The 1z-based 16Gb LPDDR5 elevates the industry to a new threshold, overcoming a major developmental hurdle in DRAM scaling at advanced nodes,” explains Jung-bae Lee, EVP of DRAM Product & Technology at Samsung Electronics.

“We will continue to expand our premium DRAM lineup and exceed customer demands, as we lead in growing the overall memory market,” adds Lee.

In terms of actual numbers, the new DRAM chip delivers up to 6.4Gbps of bandwidth, and is said to be 16 percent faster than previous generations of 16GB RAM that the company has manufactured before. It is also a considerable 30 percent thinner than the previous iteration too, which means Samsung or any manufacturer, can dedicate aspects of the internals of their new devices to other specifications or components.

The company may have outlined this new DRAM for flagship phones, but Samsung will also be eyeing for automotive applications too, so the infotainment and smart systems of future vehicles could also be sporting this latest chip.

“Samsung will also expand the use of its LPDDR5 offerings into automotive applications, offering an extended temperature range to meet strict safety and reliability standards in extreme environments,” concludes the company’s announcement.
