Sony’s PS5 invite-only pre-order page hints at limited availability at launch

Earlier this week Sony launched a pre-order page for the PlayStation 5. While this would be exciting news for anyone wanting to get their hands on the new PS5 when it is expected to launch at the end of the year, the page is a little more complicated than that.

This as it is not strictly a pre-order page as consumers would normally think of it. Instead it’s a page to register your interest in pre-ordering, with no guarantee that you will indeed be able to pre-order the device.

There are also a few other caveats, such as requiring a PS Online ID in order to complete the registration process.

Added to this is the fact that we’re no closer to knowing how much the PS5 – both the regular and Digital Edition – will cost at launch, or indeed when it is expected to be available to purchase in South Africa.

At this stage then, the pre-order page is a bit of a lottery.

There is also an interesting piece of information included on the page, with Sony writing that, “There will be a limited quantity of PS5 consoles available for pre-order, so we will be inviting some of our existing consumers to be one of the first to pre-order one from PlayStation.”

“Pre-order reservations will be taken on a first-come-first-serve basis, so once you get an invite via email, we encourage you to follow instructions and act fast,” it adds.

With rumours during the height of COVID-19 suggesting that Sony would not have the capacity to manufacture enough consoles to meet demand at launch, it looks as if the console will prove very hard to come by when it is eventually launched.

With fans of Microsoft and the upcoming Xbox Series X in a similar position when it comes to pricing and availability, it looks like those wanting a next-gen console will only be receiving information on their device of choice very close to the festive season 2020 launch dates.
