South African cinema launches campaign for 28th August re-opening

As we learned recently, the two biggest cinema chains in the country, Nu Metro and Ster-Kinekor, announced plans for a big re-opening come this Friday 28th August.

Now we know that the pair, together with other forces in the local movie business, have kicked off the “It’s Time To Go BIG Again” initiative centred around the website gobigagain.co.za and the #GoBIGagain hashtag. The point of this isn’t just to let everyone know that movies are open again, but also to highlight the safety procedures in place to keep both cinema staff and movie goers safe.

The two big movies that mark the re-opening of the cinemas will be Tenet and Mulan, but these other titles have been listed on the Go BIG Again website as available on local shores soon:

  • Ava
  • Fatima
  • The New Mutants
  • The Secret Garden
  • After We Collided
  • Trolls World Tour
  • Scoob!
  • The King’s Man
  • The High Note
  • Wonder Woman 1984
  • Antebellum
  • Made in Italy
  • Candyman
  • Dragon Rider
  • Honest Thief
  • Toorbos
  • Flatland

The “It’s Time To Go BIG Again” campaign is backed by Avalon Group Cinemas, Cinevation, Disney Africa, Empire Entertainment, Filmfinity, Indigenous Film Distribution, Nu Metro Cinemas, Sony Pictures, Ster-Kinekor Theatres and United International Pictures. That’s just about all the big names when it comes to local cinema and film distribution.

“All of South Africa’s cinema exhibitors, film distributors and international studio representatives, along with other industry stakeholders, joined hands and have been collaborating for the past few months to effectively map out the reopening of the industry on non-competitive terms. We are also very grateful for the overwhelming support from our partners in the media and entertainment community, who have demonstrated keen interest over the past few months and teamed up with us to launch this campaign nationwide. It’s time to go BIG again!” reads a joint press release sent out by the companies above.

You can see some of the safety procedures planned for the re-opening in this video published by Ster-Kinekor, embedded at the bottom of the post. Until a vaccine for COVID-19 is discovered, this will be the new normal for the the theatre experience.

As for the pandemic itself, official numbers highlight that there have been 609 773 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the country. There have also been 506 470 recoveries, 93 303 active cases and 13 059 deaths.
