Today Samsung hosted an event under the banner Samsung Prestige.
There are a number of new electronics being unveiled, but we only really care about one – the Galaxy Z Fold2.
The handset was teased back in Unpacked 2020 in August, with a promise of more information today and Samsung delivered.
So what’s new?
For one the cover display now covers the entire front of the handset. The 6.2inch display is fully functional and can be used for just about everything you’d usually do on a smartphone.
Opened up however the main display is no a larger 7.6inches with slimmer bezels, a 120Hz refresh rate and a notch-less front camera. There are also dual speakers with “the best dynamic sound available on a Galaxy device to date”.
Definitely a claim worth investigating.
So what about the hinge? That ever so delicate feature that allowed dirt to get inside the original Fold?
Samsung as used similar sweeper tech it introduced in the Galaxy Z Flip. This time the sweeper is smaller and the hinge is thinner thanks to some clever engineering.
What about the cameras though? Right now all we know is that it “offers flagship-level camera quality and control”. We will be sure to update this story once more information is available.
Thankfully Samsung did mention that a 4 500mAh battery is driving things along which is a bump up from the original Galaxy Fold.
Now for the ever present question – how much will this cost?
At present Samsung has told us that the Galaxy Z Fold2 will retail for R49 999 and be available from 25th September. Pre-orders open on 7th September.
This story is developing and more information will be added as it is revealed. Hit F5 for the most up-to-date version.
