The past few days have proved less than ideal for many South Africans as Eskom implements stage 4 loadshedding. Exacerbating matters is the fact that the country still has a global pandemic to contend with, as the number of cases for COVID-19 in South Africa to date rises to 630 595.
This as 2 336 new infections have been recorded over the past 24 hours by the National Department of Health (NDoH).
Looking at the provinces which contribute the most to the latest new daily infections figure, Gauteng is responsible for 33.5 percent, followed by the Western Cape at 16.9 percent and the Eastern Cape at 13.7 percent.
Along with the rise in new cases, the number of fatalities too has risen, with 126 more deaths registered by the NDoH.
This brings the total to date to 14 389, with the department noting that of the new 126, 12 are from KwaZulu-Natal, 49 from Gauteng, 29 from Eastern Cape, 15 from Free State, 16 from the Western Cape and five from the Northern Cape.
Still the recovery rate for the country remains high at 87 percent, with 553 456 recorded as of the time of writing.
Another interesting element to the latest statistics is that the previous 50 unallocated cases (which have been in place for a couple of months), have seemingly been allocated, but it’s unclear precisely where. Hopefully the NDoH will provide clarity on that front later in the day.
