Loadshedding set to be a feature for the weekend says Eskom

Loadshedding is set to continue today although thankfully at the lower frequency of Stage 3. The sad news is, we can expect rolling blackouts throughout the weekend.

All week Eskom has been battling outages caused by multiple generation unit breakdowns. As of Thursday evening unplanned breakdowns accounted for 11 185MW of generating capacity being off of the grid while planned outages have seen 5 040MW of power being unavailable.

While those numbers are the lowest they have been all week (with the exception of planned outages) that amount of breakdowns is not a good thing. Eskom says that its technicians are working around the clock to restore capacity.

With a full day of loadshedding at Stage 3 starting at 08:00 and running through to 22:00 we recommend checking your schedules online to prepare.

Alternatively the EskomSePush app for Android or iOS smartphones delivers notifications regarding loadshedding directly to your smartphone.

On Thursday during a question and answer session with the National Council of Provinces, Deputy President David Mabuza blamed Eskom’s ageing fleet of power stations for loadshedding.

The Deputy President is also hopeful that Medupi and Kusile power stations will “reduce pressure” on the grid.

“We are confident that by the introduction of Medupi and Kusile into the grid – I think Medupi will be operational probably by the end of the year if everything goes well – gradually it will reduce the pressure on the generation of electricity,” Mabuza said.
